The 10th John Suter Memorial Six-a-Side Tournament
Written by Ian Gilchrist
Monday, 17 September 2007

The annual tournament took place on Saturday 4th August, at Ynysddu Welfare Grounds.

24 teams once again participated for the third year in succession, with two late entries having to be unfortunately turned away. There are plans to extend the competition to a maximum of 28 teams in 2008.

Unusually, although not unexpected in this notoriously wet summer, the competition started with rain and drizzle, but this cleared up by noon, leaving a cloudy day, and cool temperatures, which the players would have appreciated. A lot different to the many scorching tournament days we've had over the years.

However, the BBQ, beer tent and Tony's Ice Cream van were all kept busy throughout the day.

Some very good and competitive football was seen, and after each side had completed their five group matches, the quarter-finals of the knock out stage produced the following quarter-final results:
Pink Panthers 0 Outsiders 2
Inter 0 Prawn Stars 0 (Prawn Stars won on penalties)
Colts 0 Lambrini 3rds 0 (Colts won on penalties)
Welfare 2 Colorsteels 0

Semi-finals:
Outsiders 0 Prawn Stars 0 (Prawn Stars won on penalties)
Colts 0 Welfare 1

Final:
Prawn Stars 0 Welfare 1

Congratulations to the Welfare, on their 7th tournament success. This was also achieved by winning all 8 games, and without conceding a goal - a tournament first. Whilst firm favourites, this is still an excellent record, and the showed the quality of the lads who play their football in the South Wales Amateur League.

It was something of a poignant moment at the end, not to be able to see Yvonne Suter hand over the winners and runners-up medals once again, but I'm sure that both John and Yvonne would have been absolutely proud and delighted to see how popular the tournament has become, which is indeed a tribute to them both.

Next year's tournament takes place, as usual, on the first Saturday in August - AUGUST 2nd, 2008.
