6 A SIDE UNDER 13s.

Great effort from a thrown together side. Old heads like Luke Prosser, Aaron Bonthrom and Daniel James backed up with juniors Aaron Richards, Justin Carter, Shaun Barns, Adam Brinkley and new comer Llewellyn Pritchard.

1st game v Oakdale B we lost 4-2. Aaron B scored 2 great goals and Adam playing for the 1st time in goals made some great saves.

2nd game we lost 5-0 to Six Bells with strong performances by Daniel and Aaron and all the junior players.

The idea for the 6 a side was to get together boys for next season under 14s and I believe all the boys did themselves proud.

See you all next season . Dia Prosser

Under 14s

Our B team opened up proceedings with a game v Risca. 1st half the teams were even with good scoring opportunities for Nathen and some good saves by Aaron. 2nd half saw Risca power to a 4-0 win.

2nd game we played Tredegar. The team played well with good performances by Joel and John in the back but were overpowered losing 5-0.

Our final game v Aberbagoed saw us score our only goal through Jamie, but sadly wasn’t good enough losing the game 6-1.

Our a side was up against Pentwynmawr B and Pengam B ha ha which turned out to be their a team.

1st game v Pent. Luke P scoring a 1st half hattrck and Katie unstoppable saw us lead at half time Daniel scored in the 2nd period and with Jason and Luke M on top form we powered . to a 4-0 win.

Next up Pengam our boys played well but 2 good goals saw them take the lead a cracking save off Luke P powerful low shot stopped us halving the 1st half score. 2nd half we gave our all and 2 good saves by Jordan couldn’t stop them from running out 4-0 winners dashing our hopes of a semi final spot.

Crusaders A 10 Hilltop Sports 4
Referee Phil Morris

The penultimate game of the season for Crusaders saw them requiring the three points from this game to ensure second place, with Hilltop rooted to the bottom of the table Crusaders had every chance of securing the points.
With the 'massive' crowd gathered Crusaders kicked off with both captains on the bench, along with John Smith, Leon Reeves & Di Thomas (kicking his heels in frustration). What a first half, as the score line suggests, Crusaders
going forward at times were irresistible, Justin Edwards the clubs top scorer opening on 10 mins, Slasher then added a second a few minutes later....but the defending, what a shambles on three occasions poor defending allowed Hilltop to bring back the deficit to 5-3 at the interval.

All the substitutes were used at half time to halt the leaking defence.

The second half started brightly with another Crusaders goal, but then a blinding half volley brought back the score line again. End to end stuff, entertainment is what the crowd wanted and Crusaders were giving them that
by the bucket load, time for Di Thomas and Paul Welch to go to the frontline to look for goals, Paul being the only Crusaders player not to score this season, and Di being willed on by the crowd to end his barren spell (with the exception of Drobac). Crusaders were in full control creating chances at will, but there was not going to be a goal for either of these, wasting chance after chance it was easy to see why neither of these have played up front this year, how Di had managed his tally of three was hard to see as he was about as deadly as a Cadbury's cream egg.

Crusaders travel to Tredegar for their last game of the season on Thursday evening but can relax as there will be nothing to play for but pride for both clubs, Crusaders finishing as runners up to Virtually unbeaten Tredegar
(although Cru's could do the double over their rivals this season)

Congratulations to the Tredegar side who finish top of the division, and have won both cups with a 4-2 victory over Aberbargoed, and Scoring 2 without reply against Rhymney...

Final score 10 - 4 Crusaders

Well Done all 22 players that have taken the field for Crusaders this season, Don't forget the times when we travelled with only 11 players or when Di took it for the club against Maesycwmmer.

thanks to each and every one who has worn the shirt, each has contributed to our final league position. and who knows if Tredegar had gone up as they should have done last season this could have been Top Spot.

Referee Chris Parnell

A wet Thursday afternoon saw the Crusaders travel to Rhymney requiring all three points to remain in contention for second place in the league, with Maesycwmmer entertaining Tredegar lower down the valley, this wet evening could see one of these sides become firm favourites for the runner's up spot.

Crusaders took the field full of confidence, the match kicked off with Chris Parnell taking the whistle. early play saw Crusaders penetrate the Rhymney side without threatening. Rhymney looked disorganised and thing looked good for the rest of the match, then low and behold defensive mistakes allowed Rhymney a few chances at goal, a late lung by Hugh Mossley gave Rhymney a
penalty - 1-0 to the home side what a mistake, was this going to be the Crusaders side blowing the league position they desire.
By half time the score was 2-1 to Rhymney after Gavin Evans levelled for the edge of the box, this just after Rhymney had converted their second penalty when Di Thomas made a wild challenge from behind a Rhymney player on the edge of the box.

Changes at half time saw Barry Williams and Leon Reeves come into the side to replace both wingers who were ineffective. Crusaders looked better but they were over anxious to pull back the game. Crusaders pushed forward looking for goals but in doing so left openings in the back line a few fine saves by Kyle kept the crusaders in the game.

At last the breakthrough Gavin Evans again finding the net from the edge of the box following good work by Barry Williams....Confidence coming back saw Darren Phillips score the vital third goal after being put through from midfield.

With the Game at 3-2 Crusaders closed out the last 20 minutes, frustration getting to the home side who through clear chances could count themselves unlucky to be behind at this stage of what proved to be a tough mental match for crusaders.

With Maesycwmmer losing to Tredegar the seen is set for Crusaders to clinch second spot with a victory over basement side Hilltop on Saturday afternoon.

a closing thought. anything other than victory Saturday would mean Crusaders travelling to Tredegar next Thursday needing nothing less than 3 points to get the converted second spot.

Crus rounded off a very creditable campaign in darkest Torfaen, with a win, and the double, over Cwmffrwdoer Sports.

Crus stormed into an early two goal lead through Adam 'Domes' Thomas and Ryan 'Keown' James, before the home side reduced the arrears. Just before half-time, Domes was upended in the box for a penalty, and up stepped regular penalty-taker, 'keepr Kyle Williams, to slot home, and restore the Crus two-goal advantage. H/T 1-3.

In the second half, Sports were reduced to ten men following a dismissal, but managed a second goal, which caused a few late nervous flutters, before Crus finally ran out deserved 3-2 winners.

The win seals a 4th place finish in the 11-team Division Two - a very good achievement, when the vast bulk of the players will still be around at this level next season. Manager Gerald Williams and assistant, Barry Williams, can both be pleased with this first season's efforts, and 2004/2005 looks extremely promising.

P.I.L.C.S. 5 Crusaders 2

The final game of the season for both sides was one of the strangest games of football witnessed. The pressure was off for both sides, with the home side comfortably mid-table, and the Crus safe from any re-election/relegation threat.

Conditions were good - warm, windless and a slick surface on the large playing area. This was Crusaders first visit here, and were looking to make amends for a 1-2 reverse against P.I.L.C.S. early in the season, when a last minute winner was conceded.

In the first twenty minutes, Crus were lucky not to be three or four goals down, as the home side contrived to miss a glut of good chances, aided by some very good saves from Crus' 'keeper Kyle Williams. On twenty-five minutes, midfielder Matthew 'Slasher' Jones, hit a cracking 25 yarder to open the scoring, and minutes later, was back on his goal-line to clear with a header from another P.I.L.C.S. attack. In the thirty fifth minute, Jones was again on hand to taunt the home defence with a pacy run, which ended with him being upended in the box. Penalty. Barry Williams coolly slotted home his second successive spot-kick, to send Crus 2-0 up at the interval.

Crusaders still played as if they were the side in arrears, despite dominating the first twenty minutes of the second period. Whilst Crus had a lot of the possession, it was the home side who posed the greater goal threat, but a third goal would have put paid to any chances of a recovery.

With 65 minutes gone, P.I.L.C.S. pulled a goal back, and thereafter, it was more or less one-way traffic, with the home side racking up another four goals, mostly headers, at regular intervals. In the last twenty five minutes, Crusaders produced a passionless, dispirited display, which was a hugely dissapointing way to end the campaign.

As school reports often state - "can do (a lot) better". A very bold line can now be drawn under Season 2003/2004, and a big improvement is needed in all areas of coaching, fitness, and above all, attitude, if Crusaders are going to stamp their mark in the Gwent County.

A rather subdued della Hockey witnessed the Thirds last game of the season. The 'B's required a point to be almost certain of avoiding the wooden spoon, three points to be certain.

After last week's heroics against champions Tredegar FC, the 'B's were hit by some bad news, when utility player Phil 'Ljundberg' Jones reported unfit. To add to this disappointment, Templars and Niblo also made themselves available for selection. The non-appearance of stalwart 'keeper, Craig the Cat Franklin, led to Revis donning the gloves, with his first duty being to pick the ball out of the back of the net after six minutes.

A poor first half culminated in another cefn goal through slack defending, although Julian judge Parr had a couple of good chances to reduce the arrears just before the interval. H/T 0-2.

A more determined Crus came more into the game after the break, especially following three substitutions - Gareth Stavros Frost for alla Beesh, Scott Gilk for Robert Dave Trigg, and the legend that is Mr Ian Cook for Niblo. The boy Cook was making his long-awaited comeback, since that momentous night in August 2003, when he single-handlely destroyed Drisiog Inn.

It was from one of Cookie's trademark persistent bursts of mediocrity, that he found Gilk Junior to hammer the ball into the Cefn net from all of six yards. The 'crowd' erupted.

Five minutes later, a controversial refereeing decision turned the match in the away side's favour. Following a Philly long throw into the box, a crus player was adjudged to have fouled, before young Gilk slotted in what would have been the equaliser. The match referee, a local lad with no refereeing qualifications, or knowledge of the game, incurred the wrath of the home support, and Gwent Police have put his house under 24 hour protection.

Cefn sealed the three points with ten minutes left. Crus B now need the 'A's to draw or beat Hilltop Sports on May 8th to avoin the NG wooden spoon.

A packed hockey field saw Crusaders entertain Tillery who from the beginning of the season had languished in the bottom half of the table (although they got to the Semi final of the Tom Perkins cup - losing to Rhymney). A good start again by the Crusaders player finding many openings against the Tillery side, but it took a john smith penalty to break them after 20 mins. It seemed only a matter of time before the floodgates opened. Darren Phillips finally found the net after missing numerous chances, and a 30 yard pile driver from Barry Williams slipped through the goalkeeper, 3-0, an then an astonishing decision by the referee after booking 2 Tillery players for descent a few minutes earlier he blew for what we thought was a crusader free kick or maybe even half time - but no he decided to walk straight to the dressing rooms, when questioned he said he was abandoning the match due to decent by both sides.
astonished by this both sides decided to continue with Tillery's Ritchie Catlin taking up the whistle.
Another 6 goals saw Crusaders claim what was in the end a more than comfortable result which could have easily saw the home side score more than the 13 they put past the Crusaders c side.

Crus entertained league leaders, and champions-elect, Race, for the second successive match played at Wattsville Recreation Ground. The weather was in stark contrast to last Tuesday evening's atrocious conditions. A very warm, sunny spring day ensured the water bottles were put to good use throughout the ninety minutes.

Race were seeking another three points to take them to within touching distance of promotion and the Division Three title. Crus were looking to produce a competitive performance, in this, their last home game of the campaign.

With several first choice players unavailable, Crus drafted in Chris Osment, Gavin Drobac and Julian Parr for their full first team debuts.

On seven minutes, Race were awarded a penalty, when Gavin Drobac was adjudged to have handled in the box. A well-place spot-kick was firmly despatched. 1-0 to the visitors.

Any chances of Race running up a substantial score were however thwarted. The attitude and commitment of the Crus were first class, and for the remainder of the half, most of the territorial advantage lay with the home side. After a period of constant pressure, Crus were awarded a penalty on 30 minutes, again for a hand-ball offence. Barry Williams made no mistake from
the spot. 1-1, game on.

Five minutes before the break, Race fortuitously went ahead. A waybound shot hit centre-back Chris Osment, and rocketed into the home goal, leaving 'keeper Kyle Williams completely stranded. A travesty of injustice. H/T 1-2.

The second half continued to be played in a competitive, but good spirit. Both defences held the upper hand for most of the proceedings. On 65 minutes, Gavin Drobac underhit a backpass, and a Race striker was able to capitilise, to score in off the post. The two goal advantage relaxed the away side, and was to prove too big a hurdle for Crus to overcome in the remaining minutes.

Race, a strong and experienced outfit, deserved the three points, but were made to fight hard throughout by a determined Crus performance. We wish them well for their inevitable Division Two campaign next season.

Finally, mention of the the referee, Mr R Rosen Of Newport. Absolutely outstanding in the middle, every decision spot on, and his manner and attitude was admired by players and spectators alike. It was obvious that he had handled games at a higher level, and it was a pleasure to have had him officiating. 10 out of 10.

Midweek matches because of the fixture backlog, taking effect on the crusaders player, a few injuries and a few knocks being carried meant a weakened side had to be put out against a Bush side who have dramatically improved from their early season form to be 4th in the league. Crusaders started brightly and after early good play found themselves 1-0 up at half time due to a OG. The 2nd half saw the Bush push for a equaliser, after hitting the post early in on the half Crusaders could count themselves lucky to still be in front, after a rash stab at a clearance from the crusaders goalkeeper totally missing the ball. a last gasp lung gave Bush a free kick just inside the touchline, the resulting free kick placed just between the upright and crossbar...1-1 no more than Bush deserved.
Hopefully this disappointing result won't affect crusaders final league position.

The 3rds travelled to Tredegar, in expectation of a battering. Having lost the home fixture 1-6, with Tredegar on the verge of winning the First Division championship and getting to two cup finals, and the Crus in penultimate position in the league, a heavy scoreline looked ominous.

However, the 3rds turned in a remarkably resilient performance to contain the league leaders to only two goals.

With six absences to the usual 3rd team squad, sixteen year old, Chris Osment was drafted into centre-back, alongside Gareth Phillips. These two were outstanding in the first period, and along with hardworking performances from the full backs and midfield, it looked as if the Crus were going into the interval, with an astonishing 0-0 scoreline. However, in added time, a bizarre incident led to the home side's first goal. Following appeals for a Crus free-kick, twenty five yards out, goalkeeper Nigel 'the cat' Franklin continued his remonstrations with the referee, whilst play switched to the right hand side, where the Tredegar winger hit a speculative cross-cum-shot into the penalty area. A somewhat distracted Cat only saw this at the last moment, and did well to get both hands to the ball, but unfortunately only managed to push the ball into the top of the net. Had he been totally distracted, the ball would have gone safely out for a goal kick. H/T 1-0.

Colin Price, Gareth Phillips and Gareth 'Stavros' Frost all sustained injuries, and were replaced with Gareth Price, Barry Will and Scott
Gilchrist, who all lended their experience to another 45 minutes of excellent commitment. The 'B's almost equalised on two occasions through Julian 'Judge' Parr and Alla Beesh.

'Keeper Cat pulled off a series of superb saves in the second half, almost redeeming himself for the first half blunder. Tredegar managed to secure the game with their second goal ten minutes from time.

A superhuman effort by all concerned. MOTM, by a country mile, and easily the best player on view, Chris Osment - a remarkable performance, but not unexpected, given his outstanding season for our Under 18s.

Referee; Mr P Richards (Cwmcarn).

A bizarre refereeing performance spoilt what would have been a cracker of a game, in this local derby.

Conditions were very poor, with a strong wind and persistent rain, which got gradually worse as the dismal evening wore on.

The match was transferred to Wattsville, following a double-booking of the Crus' usual home ground at Fields Park, Newbridge.

Whilst Crus were safe from the threat of relegation, Cefn Fforest had it all to play for, in their quest for promotion to Division 2. They were also looking to do the treble over Crus, following a league and cup double, earlier in the season.

A fiercely-contested first period ended 0-0, and with Crus having faced the severe weather conditions, it looked to be a big advantage for the home side in the second half. However, with 5 minutes of the first half remaining, referee Paul Richards amazingly dismissed Crus' midfielder Barry Williams following a second caution - resulting from comments from a Cefn Fforest supporter! The away side could'nt believe their luck.

The Crus however matched the visitors through most of the second period, and even after the away side had scrambled a lead on the hour, Crus 10 men hit back, and sub John Smith hammered in a twenty-five yard free-kick to bring the scores level.

The second major turning point occured ten minutes from time. Centre-back Gareth Phillips made a brilliant sliding tackle to deny the dangerous Cefn attack, only for the referee to award a penalty, when he was fully thirty yards behind play. The home support were in uproar. To maybe justify his misplaced decisions, the ref also saw fit to dismiss crus full-back John Postians, for an innocuous comment.

The penalty was converted, and Cefn breathed a huge sigh of relief - after all, it was now 12 against 9 out there.

All 14 players used by Crus gave everything. If Cefn thought this was going to be an easy three points, they had a severe shock, and given an even playing field, the home side would have been firm favourites to win.

Amongst many very good individual performances, absolutely outsatanding on the night was under 18s 'keeper, Kyle Williams. He really has made the no 1 shirt his own in recent weeks. Two saves in particular were fantastic.

Cefn left the field, relieved and in fairness, somewhat apologetic for the referees part in depriving the Crus of at least a point. Our best wishes to Cefn in their remaining games this season, they wont have a tougher fixture, even against 11 men.

Thursday saw a chance for Crusaders to avenge their cup defeat at the hands of Unbeaten Tredegar, 2 enforced changes saw Kyle make his debut and Leon Reeves stand in for the absent Gareth Jenkins, after a late start the game kicked of with Crusaders pushing forward, Dominating the early possession. John Smith unlucky not to open the scoring on a few occasions. Tredegar looked unprepared for the early onslaught and tried to turn the game by questioning any decisions given against them. the Tredegar centre half could count himself lucky to still be on the field after the final whistle after constant abuse of the referee and a desperate late challenge on Leon which could have been far worse had the Crusaders player not seen the attempted challenge. Crusaders finally made the breakthrough after the Half hr with John heading in at the far post from a fine cross. This sent the home side delightfully into the half time break ahead and thoughts of the disappointment of Saturday turned to a determination to end Tredegar near faultless campaign.
The second half saw the introduction of a freshened side by Tredegar who seemed determined to hold onto their record. a towering header hit the bar but tremendous defensive work by Crusaders saw the Tredegar side limited to half chances apart from Kyle's tip over in the first half and Paul Welch's goal bound clearance it's hard to recall any other opportunities. crusaders should have doubled their lead when Justin found himself on the edge of the box with only the open goal, only to shoot well wide. everything Tredegar threw at Crusaders the Crusaders defence was more than equal too, thus enabling the Cru's to run out 1-0 winners.

An excellent performance by all and although we are no longer in the Cups this win should restore confidence in the Cru's ability to finish second in the league.

Crusaders found themselves unlucky at half time pressed for the equalised which duely came from Justin Edwards hitting a firmly struck volly into the back of the Tredegar net. 1-1 and all to play for, again against the run of play Tredegar scored their second from a headed goal at the far post....John the nearly brought the game back level stright away putting over from fully 3 yards, the goalkeeper beaten, Tredegar breathed a sigh of relief as they maintained their lead, the Crusaders side being dejected by the wasted

@ The Bowling Green, Ponymister
AC PONTYMISTER 2 CRUSADERS 3
Referee: Mr Steve Paskin (Bassaleg)

A remarkable last five minutes culminated in the Crus snatching all three points in this local derby. This game had everything - sendings-off, yellow cards, two penalties, all before a frantic finale, which will be remembered for a long time.

Crusaders made the short journey down the valley, having to make a couple of enforced changes, with striker, Ryan Watkins, unavailable after a recent car accident, and midfielder, Dan Howls, away with work committments. Seconds full back, Jamie Edwards, was drafted in , together with Matthew Jones, making his first start for a while. Under 18s 'keeper, Kyle Williams
continued in goals, with the core of the team, being the same as that who gained two successive away draws at Thornwell Burnt Barn and FC Dugout.

After last weekend's results, Crusaders had dropped to the penultimate spot, having been leapfrogged by FC Dugout and New Inn. AC Pontymister were attempting to beat the Crus (and formerly, Fleur-de-Lys) for the first time in three seasons, whilst the Crus were looking for their first 'double' of the season, having beaten Ponty 2-1 at Fields Park, back in August.

The pitch was in good condition, but a gusty wind made life a little difficult for good control, and AC Pontymister started with the wind at their backs. Just after the twenty-minute mark, Crus winger, Gareth Price, got involved in scuffle with a Pontymister player, and to the surprise of them both, and the watching spectators, they were both shoen the red card, thus reducing the teams to 10 apiece.

A hard fought first 30 minutes, with few chances, ended in a penalty award to the home side, following crus' centre-back, Leon Reeves, unceremoniuosly upending a home striker. a coolly-taken penalty put the home team 1-0 up, although Crus did well to contain the opposition to this score at the interval, knowing that it would be a big advantage to have the wind in their favour in the second period.

Ten minutes into the second half, the home defence only managed to partially clear, and up stepped Jamie Edwards to rifle in a low thirty-yarder to equalise. A cracking effort. Crus were now dominating all aspects of the game, with the home side unable to get out of their own half for long periods.

On 65 minutes, Crus had an excellent opportunity to take the lead, when captain, Chris Jenkins, was fouled inside the 18-yard area, and Crus were awarded a penalty kick. With regular penalty-taker, Ryan watkins, sidelined, up stepped midfielder Scott Gilchrist, but his well-struck shot was too close and at a saveable height, and the home keeper was able to parry away.

The game continued with Crus dominating, and three substitutions were made by manager, Ian Gilchrist, to freshen up the side, in what was a tiring game, with most of it being played a man short. On came Under 18s left winger, Adam 'Domes' Thomas (for Matthew Jones), Julian 'Judge' Parr (for Scott Gilchrist) and the veteran Darren 'Mighty' Phillips (for Adrian Davies).

With Crus going hell for leather for a winner, they were almost caught out, when a rare home counter attack, saw one of their subs round the Crus' keeper, only to amazingly hit his shot well wide, in front of an open net. This should have been a warning to Crus, who looked to have conceded the deciding goal, when from a hopeful long ball, the Ponty striker was able to get his shot past kyle Williams, with 30 seconds of normal time remaining. The 'last-minute' jinx looked to have struck for the umpteenth time this campaign, but Crus heads never dropped, as they pressed forward in search of a desperate response. An astonishing recovery by a home defender, by getting back to clear off his own line, looked to have sealed the points. But from the resulting throw-in, the ball fell at the far post to supersub, Darren Phillips, whose shot the keeper could not hold. 2-2 in the third minute of added on time.

That looked to be that, and with no lengthy second-half stoppages, all eyes were on the referee, but play continued. It was all Crus, and with the clock showing 95 minutes, John Postians hit a ball into the home penalty area, which midfielder, Barry Williams did very well to control and hold off a challenge. He managed to lay back the ball to Supersub 2, young Domesy, who hammered the ball into the roof of the net from 15 yards. Cue delirium. Another minute went by before Mr Paskin blew the full-time whistle, to bring
an extraordinary game to a finish.

The home support, for certain periods, raucous and noisy, were reduced to a stunned total silence, whilst Crus players and support celebrated a dramatic victory.

The attitude and spirit shown in the last three games, just shows what this team is capable of achieving, and with the club pulling all together, it should augur well for next season's Division Three campaign. The focus for the last four games, (three of them at home), has to be for a top 9 finish - which would be our best GCFAL season yet.

MOTM - centre-back Gareth 'Philly' Phillips - looks as if he has been playing first team football all season, and this his only 2nd appearance in a league fixture. Commanding performance at the back.

A memorable evening - well done lads.

Crusaders Looking to bounce back from defeat to Maesycwmmer the previous week fielded a near full strength side against a Rhymney side that have been in the bottom half of the table since the beginning of the season. All three points seemed a safe bet at the start of this game. Crusaders dominated the possession throughout the game without really threatening the Rhymney goal.
0 - 0 at half time, a poor result considering Crusaders expectations. The second half, more of the same Rhymney scored first against the run of play, Crusaders soon levelling through Huw Mossley. Crusaders failing to find the net throughout the game can count themselves lucky that Rhymney conceded a penalty with 10 min's to go. John Smith ensuring Crusaders gain all three points.

Oakdale 3 Crusaders 0.

Crusaders started very much the stronger side hoping to avenge the defeat a week ago. Liam and Luke Moreton had a lot to prove tonight and their opposite numbers didn’t get a kick. A lot of pressure, a strong run through the heart of their midfield by Liam ended with him being brought down for a penalty. Luke Prosser stepped up hit the ball well only for the keeper to save down to his left. As the 1st half progressed Oakdale came into the game with some good passing moves and possession this passage of play gave them a penalty after Ben sent their winger down their striker stepped up and smashed the ball way over the bar. It was a game that could have finished 0-0 but 3 goal mouth scrambles with their forwards getting the final touch to secure the 3 points and the crus stunned. The game finished with both defences on top.

Despite the result, a very good game of football between two well-matched teams. The fixture earlier in the season, had seen 'Civil' come from three goals down , to win 4-3.

The absence of injured key Crus' players, John Postians and Adam Thomas, meant a re-shuffle, and before half-time, the home side had nosed in front. 1-0.

In the second half, Crus had a couple of chances to equalise, before the 'Civil' doubled the lead, and eventually ran out comfortable winners.

Another very entertaining encounter, between two evenly-matched sides. The pitch was in good condition, and perhaps this was the first occassion that anyone can ever remember a complete lack of wind (and rain/sleet/snow) at this exposed location, towards the top of the Ebbw Valley.

For the second away match running, Crus played some of their best football of the season, going forward with some very good flowing football. It was no surprise when goalkeeper-turned-stiker Ryan Watkins fired in the opener on 10 minutes. And after combining well with co-striker Adrian Davies, another well-taken chance saw the Crus 2-0 up within the first twenty minutes.

Five minutes before half-time, the home side levelled, when the Crus defence failed to mark properly from a corner, and a headed goal saw Dugout reduce the arrears. However, within two minutes, Crus had re-established their two-goal lead, when, again, Ryan Watkins, capitilised on a good through ball by Barry Williams, to make it 3-1 to Crus, just before the interval.

Confidence was high, and the second half started in a similar fashion, with Crusaders putting together two or three good moves, which should have resulted in further goals. The inability to finish off the home side, was to prove costly, as the home side began to get more possession, and with their'keeper and defence continuing to bombard the Crus defence with long, high balls on a field which has to be one of the smallest in the division.

With twelve minutes left, the home side scored with a deflected shot from twenty yards, and five minutes later, equlised with a flying header from an excellent crossfield pass.

As the old football cliche goes, 'a game of two halves', with the Crus a shade unfortunate not to get all three points, but credit to FC Dugout for never giving up. the result means that the Crus are now 1 point ahead of both FC Dugout and New Inn, although both these clubs have a game or two in hand.

Worthy of mention on the day, was our Under 18 'keeper, Kyle Williams, making his debut for the Firsts - a very good display, and in no way could any of the opposition goals be attributed to him. His handling was excellent throughout, and with injuries to a couple of senior goalkeepers, an extended run looks likely for the remainder of the season. Also making his first-team competitive debut, centre-back Gareth 'Philly' Phillips, had a very good game, quick and strong in the tackle, and again, can look forward to a few
more outings in the firsts' remaining fixtures.

MOTM award went to Crus captain and left-back, Chris 'Jinxy' Jenkins, who did an excellent job marshalling the defence, often anticipating and sweeping well, to clear any danger.

Finally, mention must be made of the referee, Mr C Burrows. Its often said that the best referees are the ones who are low-profile and dont become the focus of the ninety minutes. Dugout and Crus know each other well, and the game is always well-fought, but, importantly, played in the right spirit. But the game today was enhanced by an excellent display from the referee, who got every decision spot on, and both managers agreed had made a significant contribution to a very good afternoon's football. 10/10.

Maesycwmmer 4 Crusaders 3.

Crusaders travelled to their nearest league rivals for what was anticipated to be an entertaining football match with the winner looking the more likely runner up in the league.
Crusaders, short of players again after the recent withdrawals and the absence of both their goalkeeper and Gareth Jenkins. 'This game was always going to be difficult enough'. With Dave Thomas taking up the gloves the match kicked off, the most
controversial incident happened on 30 sec's with Dave coming to claim the ball before a late late challenge by the opposition striker resulted in both laying injured. No question the Maessy man being at fault (should have been shown the red card although being unable to continue probably saved Maessy from going down to 10 men). Dave no longer able to continue retired after 5 min's. With the resumption of play the game descended into a dirty affair that wouldn't have looked out of place on a rugby field, Maesycwmmer, foul after foul destroyed Crusaders attempts at playing football and during a break scored first as Jamie Edwards found himself out of position.

The game continued with Maesycwmmer receiving 3 yellow cards in the first half for late challenges and decent.
Half time came with the score at 2 - 2, after Alun prosser fired in a free kick and Chris Parnell scored his first of the season.

During the 2nd half the Maesycwmmer player continued to disrupt Crusaders attempts at playing football and basically muscled their way to a 4-2 advantage.

with 20 min's to go Crusaders pushed forward, Alun was unlucky not to score after getting behind the opposition defence only first to fire at the keeper and then put the rebound across the face of goal just out of the reach of oncoming John Smith. The minutes drew out and the Heavyweight Maesycwmmer side began to fade, another free kick bounced of the foot of the post to be headed in by Huw Mossley, but alas too late with a few minutes to go the Maesycwmmer side held onto all three points.

THORNWELL BURNT BARN 5 CRUSADERS 5
Referee: Mr Trevor Kemp (Newport)

A ten-goal thriller ended with Crusaders taking a valuable away point at the division's third-placed club. Incredibly, this was the Thornwell's second successive 5-5 home draw, and one in which they never took the lead.

One of few games to be played in South Wales, following the recent snowfall and thaw, the game was played in blustery conditions, with the strong wind coming in off the Severn estuary. The ground at Thornwell, overlooking the old Severn Bridge, and the confluence of the Wye and Severn rivers, is in an elevated spot and always open to the elements. Notwithstanding this, both sides played some very good football in the heavy conditions, and ultimately, a draw was a fair reflection of events.

Crus were ahead on six minutes, when following a wayward defensive clearance by the home team, striker Adrian Davies calmly slotted a half-volley over the advancing 'keeper for the opening goal. Four minutes later, Crus midfielder Scott Gilchrist sent a good pass through to Dan Howls, who outpaced the home defence, before scoring with an excellent left footed cross-shot. At 2-0 up, and with the wind at their backs, Crus looked as if they could add more, before Thornwell broke in the 20th minute, and scored with a close-range effort. However, within three minutes, Crus had re-established their two-goal advantage. A free kick awarded some forty yards out, was well struck diagonally by centre-back, Ben Murphy, and Barry Williams met the ball well outside the six-yard box, and planted a firm header into the far corner. Ten minutes before the break, after some desperate blocking and last-ditch defending by Crus, the home side reduced the arrears, when the ball broke to a Thornwell player, who netted from ten yards. H/T 2-3.

With Thornwell now having the advantage of the strong wind at their backs, the second half was always going to be a difficult one for the Crus. And with an hour gone, when one of the home side's defenders equalised with a scorcher from fully 35 yards, it looked as if the first half efforts were going to be all in vain. However, with a storm hitting the ground mid-way through the half, and the freezing rain coming down horizontally, this seemed to spur on the away side. In the 80th minute, following a deflected free kick from Ben Murphy, which the home 'keeper could not hold, substitute Johnny Smith fired in the loose ball from ten yards to put Crus 4-3 in
front. Four minutes later, a Thornwell corner resulted in a headed goal for the home side to level matters once more. And with two minutes left, Crus thought they had snatched all three points, when following a speculative shot, which appeared to be going wide, the Thornwell 'keeper could only parry out, and striker, Ryan watkins, composed himself, before slotting a shot into the corner of the net. Back came the home side, and attacking pressure brought them a free kick just outside the angle of the penalty box.A well taken free-kick was headed on, and following a goal-line scramble, the ball was just forced over the line, with the ninety minutes up. 5-5.

Both sides deserve much praise for the entertainment on show, and the sporting manner in which the game was played. Considering the elements and the ground conditions, this was a great advert for Gwent County Division 3 football, and one of the most exciting games to have been involved in. The officiating of the legendary referee, Mr Trevor Kemp, only added to the occasion. An unexpected away point, has now pushed the Crus above FC Dugout, in the league table, and seven points clear of bottom-placed Abergavenny Thursdays, who only have four games left.In a game where all 14 players used played very well, particularly given recent form, outstanding on the day, and Man Of The Match award went to midfielder Barry Williams.

However, the New Inn keper was responsible for keeping their side ahead on a number of occassions, before Crus equalised with a well -taken goal from midfielder Desperate Dan Howls. Crus were much more positive in the second period, but in pushing forward in search for the winner, New Inn broke away, with their striker rounding the Crus 'keeper, for the winner. A capacity crowd witnessed a very lucky win for the 'visitors'. The game had been moved from Cwmfelinfach on police advice, with an early kick-off insisted upon by Gwent Constabulary.

The 'B's tore into the 'A's from the off, and the first twenty minutes was played at a hectic pace, with neither side able to dominate. Steve Prosser netted with a chip from 20 yards to open the scoring on 22 minutes, and the 'B's were unlucky with a couple of goalmouth scrambles, before Prosser again scored with a downward header following a corner-kick. Goal number three, was conceded by 'B's full back, Shane 'Niblo' Badham, whose trademark left-footed miskicked slice, left 'keeper, Nigel 'Cat' Franklin, floundering in the Fields Park mud. A fourth goal just before half-time from Johnny Smith did nothing to appease the partisan crowd, who could not forgive him for transferring from the Thirds to the Seconds a couple of weeks ago. H/T 0-4.

'B's manager, Simon 'Temps' Stephens, was in a very subdued mood, and his troops failed to rally in the second period, with another seven goals scored through 'A's Steve Prosser, Johnny Smith (2), Justin Edwards (2), Julian 'Judge' Parr and chief moaner & grumbler, Dai 'Kempes' Thomas. 11-0 did not reflect the commitment of some 'B's players, notably Gavin Drobac and Philly.

A full investigation is being held into the refereeing, as Phil Morris has openly admitted to being in a business partnership with an unnamed seconds player - the player concerned was apparently mightily embarrassed, and had to flee to Scotland prior to the game. It was evident that all the major decisions went to the 'A's, and a furious crowd were restrained by BOP

A strong blustery wind, on a raw winter's day, contributed to the poor standard of football on show.

There was not much evidence of flowing football from either side, until the 30th minute, when Crus managed to put a few headed passes together to put striker Adrian Davies through. A sweetly-struck half-volley from twenty five yards, sailed into the net over the visitors' stranded 'keeper. Almost immediately, the Thursdays went downfield and equalised from a short-range shot.

Then two minutes before the break, Crus put together their only decent passing movement, down the right, culminating in striker Ryan Watkins heading home from eight yards. H/T 2-1.

Notwithstanding having to face a second-half wind, this should have given the home side a neccessary confidence boost. However, Crus failed to dominate the bottom-placed side, and it was no surprise when, from more defensive errors, Abergavenny equalised mid-way through the half. Therafter, Crus had three shots blocked on the line by Thursday's 'keeper, whilst Abergavenny were denied two potential winners - one for offside, and another 'scored' from a free-kick, but not given, as the referee had indicated an indirect decision. All in all, no side deserved the three points, in a game reflecting each club's respective positions in the league. Crus remain 7 points ahead of the Thursdays, with two games in hand.

This narrow defeat in the local derby has all but put paid to the Crus' slim hopes of finishing in one of the two play-off places.
The match result could have been all so different, if the home side had taken two early chances within five minutes. An evenly- balanced game saw the visitors take the lead on twenty minutes, when a long range effort cannoned off 'keeper Kyle Williams, and the rebound was tucked away. Defences then stayed on top for the remainder of the first half. H/T 0-1.
Good football was at a premium, as the game continued at a fast pace. A FPP striker scored a very good goal from 25 yards to put the visitors in the driving seat, and then a calamatous own-goal, by the otherwise outstanding Chris Osmond, saw FPP almost out of sight at 3-0 up.
However, never right off this Crus side. Top-scorer Aled Turley, who had a quiet first 70 mins, burst into life, firstly hitting the underside of the crossbar with a cracking half-volley, before he reduced the arrears with a left-foot drive, following a good through ball from Grant Davies. With five minutes remaining, Aled then arrived at the far post for his second, to set up a thrilling finish. With corners and throw-ins raining into the FPP area, the visitors just about managed to cling on for victory, which now sees them as favourites to enter the play-offs with probably Chepstow Town. The Crus recorded their first away victory of the season, with a well-deserved 2-0 victory at New Inn. It was also the first time this campaign, that the Firsts have achieved a 'clean sheet', away from home, with the defence at last showing full concentration for the whole ninety minutes.

Crusaders almost took the lead within twenty seconds, when Matthew Jones went through the home defence unopposed, but blazed wide with only the 'keeper to beat. In a frantic first few minutes, New Inn then spurned a couple of good opportunities to score, before Crusaders took a seventh-minute lead. Ryan Watkins played a splendid pass to his co-striker, Adrian Davies, who coolly rounded the New Inn keeper to slot home the opener.

For the next twenty minutes, New Inn looked the more likely to score, but the Crus defence began to look more solid as the game progressed. As Crus midfield started to dominate, an excellent run down the left flank by Dan Howls, was followed by a good cross into the six-yard area, where full-back, and captain, Chris Jenkins was on hand to firmly plant the ball in the back
of the net. He must have momentarily thought he was playing his normal midfield role, to be that far forward. At 2-0 up, confidence visibly grew, and the home side struggled to create anything positive. H/T 0-2.

In the second half, the Crus defence was in uncompromising mood, and 'keeper Jason Watkins, had little to do. The whole back four played well as a unit, and the midfield and attack were now carving out chances with regularity. Barry Williams and Scott Gilchrist got a firm grip of central midfield, with the latter hitting the woodwork on two ocassions. Poor finishing by Crus, and some desperate defending by the home side, kept the score at 0-2. A fairer reflection would have been a 5-2 victory for the Crus, but nevertheless, a very important three points were gained at the expense of one of our basement rivals. Commendable performances from all thirteen involved - full-back Lyndon Smith and midfielder Scott Gilchrist, recovering well from early injuries, which saw both of them off the field for lengthy periods, following blows to the head, which resulted in a couple of bloodied noses. Captain 'Jinxy' led by example throughout, and solid performances from centre-back Leon Reeves, and the quicksilver Matthew Jones. However, MOTM nomination went to centre-back, Ben Murphy - a towering performance saw him win all his aerial and 50/50 confrontations - and not a yellow or red card in sight.

The win saw the Crus go 1 point in front of New Inn, and into 11th place in the 13-team Division Three. Crusaders are right now on the coat-tails of FC Dugout, and should be in bouyant mood for the vist of bottom-placed Abergavenny Thursdays, to Fields Park, next Saturday.

For the second time this season, Chepstow and the Crus played out a 3-3 draw, which leaves us no clearer as to which teams will finish in the play-off positions. The two sides are very evenly matched, and, again, a draw was a fair reflection of play. It would be fitting if these two teams eventually progressed.

Two early goals by the home side rocked the Crus, and although, thereafter, the visitors had the better of the remainder of the half, Chepstow took a 2-0 lead into the second period. An early second half goal was essential for the Crus, to give them a platform for a comeback. Sure enough, midfielder Ryan James popped up, to bundle in a goal from a set piece, to reduce the arrears. Almost immediately, it looked as if Crus efforts were going to be all in vain, as Town swiftly broke away, to re-establish a two-goal lead, at 3-1. The home side must have been thinking that a win would take them within touching distance of wiining Division Two, particularly with only another four games to go, three of which are at their home ground.

But a tremendous fightback ensued, with firstly 'keeper Kyle Williams confidently netting from a hotly-disputed spot kick. Then, with just under 10 minutes remaining, Ryan James scored again from close range, to equalise, and set up a frantic finale. Both sides had shots cleared off the line, and some last-ditch defending saw honours even at 3-3. Another exciting, and enjoyable encounter, of which there have been many this season. Manager, Gerald Williams, must be well pleased with the quality, attitude and commitment, which bodes well for the rest of this season, and beyond.

MOTM - Ryan James.

Crusaders-0 Cefn Fforest-3.

Crusaders without 5 key first choise players were always going to struggle against a Cefn Fforest side smarting about 2 narrow defeats,1 cup 1 league.
A mistake between Jorden and Jason confounded matters early in the first half. But some brilliant saves by Jorden kept us in the game until the second half. Cefn Fforest scored twice in the second period and had their goal keeper and the bar to thank to stop Daniel Morris getting a hattrick and Crusaders goalless.

A consecutive home match saw another high-scoring game, played in very heavy conditions. The Crus were unfortunate to concede an early goal, when centre-back, Ben Murphy, in making a tackle on the edge of the penalty area, inadvertantly scored an own-goal, with keeper, Jason Watkins, wrongfooted. As in previous weeks, the Crus then showed good character, in scoring twice in the next half-hour, through striker Ryan Watkins, to lead 2-1. The equaliser was a close-range effort, whilst the second was a well-taken penalty, the latter followed a good run into the box, by midfielder Dan Howls, before he was upended. Unfortunately, a minute before the interval, Crus conceded a sloppy equaliser, when poor defending resulted in a gift goal for the visitors. H/T 2-2. With Crus fielding a bare eleven, conditions took its toll, and Cefn were able to call on fresh legs in the second period. Two close-range efforts and a well-taken free-kick by Cefn, were enough for them to run out comfortable winners - Crus were unable to reproduce the first half's form, as they found the slope and increasing wind against them. A disappointing way to exit the cup, but time now to concentrate on improving the league position, in the
weeks ahead.

MOTM - Ryan Watkins (goalkeeper, turned striker for the day - led the line well, and almost notched a hat-trick)

Crusaders 'A' 1 vs Cefn FForest 1

This the first match crusaders have had for a few weeks due to resent bad weather, saw Crusaders take on a Cefn Fforest ide that had scored 13 goals in their last two games.
The day started off bad and then got worse with the absence or Ritchie Davies (Bad Ass - Don't ask), Gavin Hoare ( tossing his sausages), Philly (Decorating??), Alun Prosser (Can't make it until the rain stop's ill be sub at 15:15) and Darren Phillips (I've Quit for the London Marathon - got practice in the Haven all afternoon to avoid injury).

The game kicked off with Steve Prosser up front along side top scorer Justin Edwards. under soft conditions the Crusaders quickly took control of the game, Gareth Jenkins dominating in midfield with Cefn FForest's forwards starved of the ball for long periods, the crusaders kept up the momentum for the first half without threatening the Cefn FForest goal, the second half started brightly with both Justin and Steve Prosser wasting good chances, Gavin Evans was forced to retire after 10 minutes. Cefn FForest being beaten back tried desperately to stifle the Crusaders front line, it wasn't until the final 15 minutes that the breakthrough arrived an excellent cross saw Steven Prosser come in at the far side to plant the ball firmly into the net.....Crusaders 1 Cefn FForest 0, and more to come we hoped but within 3 minutes the scores were level Cefn FForest capitalising on Crusaders inability to deal with a ball in the area, their one chance lead to one goal, desperate to regain the lead Justin Edwards fired inches wide when it looked imposable to miss, another one on one saw a chipped goalkeeper thanking the crossbar for keeping crusaders out....with time running out Huw Mossley was 'taken out' in the box as Cefn FForest desperately tried to keep the Crusaders at bay - everyone on the field saw it except for the referee...who later apologised - with the last appeal waved away the referee blew for time. this was not the end thou....Justin and Jamie Edwards continued their appeal against the ref ending with a yellow for Justin whilst Jamie saw red..... a disappointed crusaders left for the changing rooms, after all the supremacy coming away with just a point.

Next week see's the Crusaders take on FC dugout in the 1/4 Final of the Presidents Cup, two weeks later they take on Cwm Sports in the Tom Perkins Cup after Cwm saw off their premier opponents Aberbargoed in the second round.

Thirds

TSA North Gwent AFL Division One
Jim Owen Field, Cwmtillery
Tillery FC 8 Crusaders 5

A high-scoring affair, ended with the home side taking all three points in a thirteen-goal thriller. At half-time, the 'B's were facing a rout at 2-6 down, but with the wind at their backs, almost turned the game around, coming back to 5-6 at one stage, before conceding a couple of late goals. Jonathan Smith (3) and the veteran Karl Thomas (2) were the Crusaders' marksmen. The thirds have shown in recent weeks that they have vastly improved their gols for tally, but must now tighten up the defence, if the points are to be secured. Three consecutive home games are now in prospect, for the remainder of this month, and some good oppotunities to to increase their points tally.

All three Seniors games postponed today, due to waterlogged pitches.

Tillery Colts 1 Crusaders 1 - scorer Daniel Morris
Tillery took the lead within 2 minutes, but the Crus levelled matters before half-time.
An outstanding display by the Tillery Colts keeper, earned his side a somewhat fortunate point, as the crus were well on top during the second period.
Another good performance, with an excellent squad turnout.

CRUSADERS 3 TRETHOMAS BLUEBIRDS 4

A very entertaining encounter against a team with promotion ambitions, saw Crusaders concede an 89th minute goal, which settled the match in the visitors' favour.

Trethomas stunned the home side with two goals in 90 seconds, around the 10th minute. However, Crusaders had much the better of the rest of the half, playing some very good football, and by half-time, had turned the game on its head, going into the interval 3-2 up. Crus first goal, scored by GAVIN HOARE, followed an excellent move with Justin Edwards and Darren Phillips combining well. GAVIN HOARE coolly slotted home the equaliser, before JUSTIN
EDWARDS' pace took him behind the Trethomas defence, before hitting a 20-yarder just inside the post.

In the second half, Trethomas scored a well-taken goal on the hour mark, and both sides had chances to score in the remaining 30 mins. Crus tired a little in the closing stages, and a combination of slack marking and lack of concentration, let in Trethomas for the winner.

Compared to recent games, a much better performance against the league's 3rd placed team, and a shade unlucky not to get a share of the spoils.

MOTM - Gavin Hoare.

The Crus remain third from bottom of the 13-team Division 3, 1 point ahead of New inn, and 4 points in front of Abergavenny Thursdays.

TSA North Gwent AFL Division One
@ Hockey Field, Cwmfelinfach - Referee Stephen 'Rocky' Radford
CRUSADERS B 2 ABERTILLERY BLUEBIRDS B 2

With Aber Blues B having held our 2nds ('A's) to a 2-2 draw last weekend, a tough game was in prospect at the Stadio della Hockey. The visitors quickly established a 2-0 lead, and the game was starting to reflect the respective league positions, Aber comfortably mid-table, with the thirds in penultimate place.

On 40 minutes, JOHNATHAN SMITH reduced the arrears to 1-2, which gave Crus hope going into the second period.

With time running out, veteran KARL THOMAS struck with virtually the last kick of the match, to give the 'B's a valuable point.

The 3rds maintained their unbeaten league form, which now stretches back to early December, (albeit only two drawn encounters have taken place during this period).

MOTM - referee (and ex-Colts legend) 'Rocky' Radford - no red cards, no yellow cards and, apparently, no whistle.

Gwent County Youth AFL Under 18s Division Two

ABERBARGOED YOUTH ACADEMY 0 CRUSADERS 2

The Crus continued their impressive recent form, with a comfortable away win at Aberbargoed.

A goal midway through the first half by this season's top scorer, ALED TURLEY, put the Crus in command, and into a lead they never looked like conceding.

Within a couple of minutes of the restart, ALED TURLEY tapped in a simple goal for his, and the team's second, and Crusaders ran out well-deserved winners, at a venue which is always difficult to gain all three points.

MOTM - Kieron Rogers

A push for the top two positions is now definitely on, and with games still remaining against each of the top three sides, the outcome is in our own hands, with eight matches to play.
