Ynysddu Welfare Crusaders Thunder Road Motorcycles South Wales Amateur Football League Division One
PLAYED 30 WON 14 DREW 6 LOST 10 GOALS FOR 67 GOALS AGAINST 57 POINTS 48
The Welfare were competing in their FIFTH consecutive season in the higher of the two South Wales Amateur Football League Divisions, following promotion from Division Two as champions in 2001/2002. This in itself, is an excellent achievement, easily surpassing the only other period that the club has been in the higher echelon, since its membership of the League in 1948/1949, when the 1987/1988 squad were Division Two champions, but lasted a mere two years in the top flight.
After finishing 7th, 6th and 12th (out of 15 clubs) in Division One, in the first three years of the current era, and 11th out of 16 clubs last season, this campaign saw a best-ever SIXTH-placed finish (from a full complement of 16 clubs), with a record points haul of 48.
Joint top-scorers for the season were Ioan Richards and Gavin Williams, with eleven goals apiece.
A quarter-final place was achieved in the W John Owen Cup, but a disappointing home defeat to Llantwit Major in February, extinguished any hopes of silverware.
With a bit more consistency away from home, eradicating the conceding of late equalisers at home, but more importantly increasing fitness levels through regular training, there is no reason why the squad, under the managership of Lewis Davies, cannot be challenging for honours in this division next season.
All in all though, a commendable season.
Crusaders Welsh Autoparts Gwent County Football Association League Division Three
PLAYED 28 WON 9 DREW 4 LOST 15 GOALS FOR 45 GOALS AGAINST 75 POINTS 31
The Crus were competing in their SIXTH consecutive season at this level, Cwmfelinfach Colts AFC having effectively taken over ailing Fleur-de-Lys AFC in 2001, and consolidated under the Crusaders AFC name a season or so later.
With the bottom club in this division being annually relegated to the district leagues, first priority each season, is always to avoid the dreaded drop , and once again, this has been achieved, this time with some ease. In fact, this was the Crus best Gwent County season to date, finishing in a highest-ever placing, at TENTH out of fifteen clubs, and achieving the best points tally of 31 (from 28 games). Previous seasons have witnessed a fair share of relegation battles , culminating in finishing league positions of between eleventh and thirteenth, when the division had only an average of fourteen clubs.
Top scorer for the season was Nicholas Thomas, with nine goals.
The squad, which was extremely young and raw at the outset of Gwent County participation, is now starting to mature, with the average age still only mid-twenties, and are far more capable of matching the divisions best sides. Realistically, a top-half finish is more than achievable next season, under the managership of David Thomas.
Crusaders Abacus Recruitment Services North Gwent Association Football League Division One
PLAYED 32 WON 9 DREW 2 LOST 21 GOALS FOR 71 GOALS AGAINST 111 POINTS 29
Simon Stephens squad look to have achieved a very decent placing (this, effectively being the Thirds) of TWELFTH out of seventeen, in this, the North Gwents lower division.
Encouraging to see a number of our Under Eighteens coming through at this level, especially in the latter past of the season. This augurs well for the future.
Never having finished bottom in this league, may not be the best possible goal and achievement ever, but competing against many other clubs first and second strings, is always going to be a tall order, so putting things in context, the lads can be proud of the effort and commitment once again.
Top scorer with 20 goals was Martin Adams, and mention must also go to 18 year old, Daniel Morris, who in his first season at senior level, bagged an impressive tally of 16 goals.
Crusader Under 18s Gwent County Football Association Youth League Under Eighteens Division One
PLAYED 18 WON 3 DREW 4 LOST 11 GOALS FOR 27 GOALS AGAINST 47 POINTS 13
This is the clubs 4th season in the prestigious Youth Sunday League. Also, this is the THIRD consecutive season, that the 18s have been in the higher of the two divisions, competing against the stronger of the club sides throughout Gwent. In itself, an admirable record for effectively a club from our small villages.
The record this season shows far more defeats than victories, but most have been by slender margins, and the side has remained competitive to the last. And just managed to avoid the divisions bottom-placing.
Big thanks go to manager Tudor Lewis, who has managed to keep the squad together now for two seasons, and who will be retiring from this post in the summer.
Top scorer for the season was Dane Bennett, with 13 goals.
Only partial league results recorded, This season saw extended periods of time where due to weather conditions the football grounds were unfit for play. Games were re-arranged for mid-week but scores etc were not made available. These will be added when they become available.
