North Gwent Special Meeting 27/09/07
Written by Ian Gilchrist
Monday, 01 October 2007
I Attended a special meeting of all North Gwent clubs in Ebbw Vale last night.

The main reason for this meeting was the league's concern in the following areas:

1. Respect for the Referee
2. Drinking of Alcohol at pitchside

1. REFEREES - I'd like to think that, as a club, we do not have a problem here. And our record, particularly at North Gwent level, bears this out. But it is no wonder, given the attitude of some indisciplined players and maladministered clubs, that there are less referees available now, than at any time since the North Gwent AFL was founded. The 'man in the middle', whether a registered referee or a club official undertaking the role for the match, MUST have the respect of the players at all times, and dissent, in particular, needs to be stamped out. Otherwise, organised football will cease to exist. Clubs who do not conform to the league's expected standards of discipline and attitude WILL be reported to the league, and sanctions could include deduction of points, hefty fines and ultimately, expulsion.

2. ALCOHOL - there is to be NO alcohol whatsoever consumed at pitchside OR in the nearby vicinity, during the course of a match. Spot checks will take place, and clubs found guilty of allowing this to happen, WILL BE DEALT WITH SEVERELY. See above for possible repurcussions. There have been instances where aggressive and intimidating behaviour have been witnessed at matches, as a result of alcohol being consumed, and this needs to be stamped out. NOW. This applies to both the home AND away clubs AND any unassociated person(s) who turn up with alcohol in their posession. Should the home club not be able to persuade such people to leave the area, and/or dispose of the alcohol, then the match IS NOT to take place, or if already started, to be abandoned. There is time enough on a Saturday, for everyone to have a drink post-match, and no reason why its neccessary to do so in the middle of the afternoon.

Whilst I appreciate that not all our club members use e-mail, I and the team managers, must emphasise the importance and urgency of these issues at the earliest opportunity ie Saturday/Sunday, to all our members. And this equally applies to our other teams taking part in their different leagues as well.

I know I can rely on your co-operation here, and for Crusaders good name to be maintained.
