Following a successful regional audition at BBC Wales in Llandaff, Cardiff, during the summer, the CRUSADERS quiz team recently headed up to BBC Television Centre in London, to take on the resident EGGHEADS team, in the popular BBC2 quiz programme.
Three of the team are regular quiz contestants at the Forestier-Walker Conservative Club (Blue Club, Cwmfelinfach) weekly quiz, and with all involved either playing, administering or following the local football team, it was decided to go under the Crusaders name.
An early 8am start was required at the Beeb, even though filming didnt commence until 10.30 a.m. Some might say that certain individuals needed the two and a half hours to have had the necessary TV make-up applied!
Although most were feeling a little nervous and apprehensive, the production team (12 Yard), the Eggheads (Chris, Daphne, CJ, Kevin and Judith), and the presenter, Dermot Monaghan, made everyone feel at ease and most welcome in the studio.
With Robert 'Bop' Davies waiting in the wings, as sixth man/sub, it was now down to the remainder to pit their wits against the Uk's master quiz team. Firstly, Barry took on Kevin in the 'Food & Drink' category, followed by Phil up against Chris on 'Entertainment'. The team's preferred subjects of Sport and Geography just weren’t going to appear, as with some reluctance, Ian opted for the 'History' category, taking on CJ, whilst, in the last of the individual rounds, Kevin took the short straw of 'Art & Books', and selected Judith as his opponent.
Not to spoil the outcome, in advance of the programme, which will transmitted probably late November/early December, two team members narrowly lost their individual rounds on tie-break questions, whilst one one got through, and another fell by the wayside. this left two of the team to oppose four Eggheads in the final.
Again, without divulging the final outcome, a titanic battle ensued, with the result only eventually settled, after a third set of tiebreak questions apiece.
A great time was had by all, and apart from Phil, who is now almost a seasoned TV quiz contestant (!), the others all could look back on their first tv experience with good memories.
It was a pleasure to have met the five 'Eggheads' and Dermot, who were all so easy to talk to and get along with. We'd definitely recommend it to other prospective participants.
Keep watching BBC2 6-6.30 pm most weekdays and Saturdays to find out how exactly we fared!
